The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

How many times have you been asked to share music by borrowing one side of your earphone?

There are several instances when this might be required, such as on a road trip with your best bud, or even during a family marathon.

However, there is the issue of playing songs that both you and the other listener like. He/she may not have the same music taste as you do, and vice versa.

Splitr is an iPhone app that solves this nuisance by playing two different tracks from the media library at the same time. The highlight is that one song is played to one earbud, while the second track is directed to the second earphone. Apart from splitting up tracks, it can also do a mashup of both the songs.

How to Use Splitr for iOS

After downloading and installing the application, you are going to find the interface quite simple; it has no extra buttons to tap or options to configure.

The main screen is split up into two halves. The upper half is for controlling music directed to the right side of the earphone, while the lower half deals with the left side. You can tap the first icon for either of the half to pick the song for the preferred side. Tapping this icon takes opens the music library on your device.

The name of the artists and the title track are displayed at the top of the upper and bottom offer. Playback controls including a volume sider and play/pause and stop are offered for each side. Splitr keeps running in the background when you are performing other tasks and can also take music to the lock screen.

The shortcoming of this app is that when a current track comes to an end, a new one has to be loaded, as there is no option to listen to playlists.

Final thoughts

Despite the shortcomings, Splitr could be pretty handy on several occasions. The app was recently updated for iOS 7 and includes a flat UI design in the latest version.

You can download Splitr from the App Store. It is available for free. Feel free to share your thoughts if you give it a try.
