The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

The default Contacts app on iOS works pretty well for storing contact information and searching contacts. But that’s the only functionality there is to it. You can’t perform any custom actions or launch them based on your contacts list.

Mingle is a new gesture based application that lets you tweet, email, chat and message a contact using any application with just a few swipes on your screen. Additionally, you can define and use custom actions of your own.

How to use Mingle: Action-Based Contacts on iOS

After downloading and installing the tweak on your phone, you will have to grant it permission to access your contacts. Search for the contact you want the app to interact it; swipe from the left to the right and the four actions mentioned before will be displayed in a button.

When this button becomes visible, you can release the contact and Mingle will perform the action. For instance, the app opens your messaging client with the recipient’s name already there when you swipe and release the contact during the appearance of the message action button.

What makes the app special is its ability to pull contact information and present it in tags, which allows you to create your own actions utilizing these tags. For example, you can use email and phone number tags to extract a default number and email address for a particular contact. Tags are also available for url, display name and twitter. Also, the app includes built-in actions that show you how you can create custom actions.

Mingle also lets you customize which app it should use for executing an action. After swiping right to left, tap an action you want to change the app for. There is an in-app option which is basically defining the default app Mingle will be using on your device. You can select a different app by tapping action, and you might have to enter additional information. For example, if you define Skype as the application for the chat application, you will be required to enter the Skype ID for the selected contact.

Final thoughts

The app has all actions to fit in your needs and offers a great way to connect most apps installed on your phone with your contacts, making them more functional and interactive.

You can download Mingle for $0.99 from the App Store. It works on iOS 7 and above and is currently available at a 50% discount. Let us know if you try it out.
