iOS 8 will introduce alternative keyboards Posted: 02 Jun 2014 11:53 AM PDT Apple iOS has been under the tight control of its creator, locking iPhone and iPad users to default elements of the software. On the same day that Apple announced that it would update the iOS 8 keyboard to include predictive text, Apple also revealed that users will have more freedom, including the freedom to use an iPhone replacement keyboard. Apple today revealed that users will soon be able to swap out a keyboard and replace the standard blue, white, and gray keys that have been used exclusively on the device. The company revealed that it will permit developers to build system-wide keyboards that can be set as the default alternative on the phone. They will be able to access the most secure areas of the device, but there will be optional limits if a user chooses not to use an alternative keyboard in some places, such as enterprise apps. Keyboard replacements were among the features I said that I most wanted to see Apple copy from Android. The ability to use third-party keyboards are just one sign of a way to introduce more flexibility and choice for consumers who may not feel that the iOS keyboard, while good but not flawless, offers everything that they desire from their text input options. Users who prefer to swipe their words into existence or get enhanced personalized text will be able to select alternatives like Swype or the SwiftKey keyboard that's already on iOS in a limited capacity. |
Apple announces Siri will get limited hands-free voice prompting and Shazam integration Posted: 02 Jun 2014 11:36 AM PDT Apple today announced iOS 8 with a number of new features, including some that we predicted and others that were not expected. One of those big changes was an improvement to Siri. Apple has announced that Siri will see an improvement in iOS 8 that allows for hands-free voice prompting when in the car. While I'm sure everyone would like an always-listening prompt similar to what Google and Motorola introduced with the Moto X, but that's sadly not the case here. However, when plugged into a car, iOS 8 will turn on a listening mode that lets iPhone users prompt Siri simply by saying, "Hey, Siri." Other changes include new Shazam recognition. When Siri opens while a song is the background, it will immediately be able to recognize that the user is attempting to learn about a song, and then use Shazam to find the song title. Once the song is identified, users can purchase it from iTunes. There will also be improvements to language and dictation understanding. More details will be released when Apple iOS 8 is delivered this fall. |
