Android chief defends platform against Apple’s Tim Cook

Android chief defends platform against Apple's Tim Cook

Google's head of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai has defended the platform in a lengthy interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. Pichai was speaking out against Apple CEO Tim Cook, who recently criticized the Android platform at Cupertino's WWDC event by saying Android's security is like a "toxic hell stew". Cook also claimed that Apple was catching Android in the market, but Sundar Pichai sees things a different way.

"Every piece of data I look at tells me that people are adopting Android at a faster pace than any other operating system. We are doing remarkably well… They run a great show. I take it for the value of the show… Do I worry about what they are doing? Yes. They are a great company. I think they are building a very good product and it's vertically integrated, which helps them do certain things faster.

It must be liberating [for Apple] to wake up and think about your device, your software, and hey, "I can even call the chipset guys and say what the chip should be," he says. "I have to think about building a platform and bringing as many people along on this journey and getting it right. I believe that ultimately it's a more powerful approach, but it's a lot more stressful as well.

You have to be careful when you make a $100,000 Mercedes car not to look at rest of automotive industry and make comments on it… We serve the entire breadth of the market, globally across all form factors, et cetera. Android from the ground up is designed to be very, very secure… History shows typically that malware is also targeted at the more popular operating system. So you know there is that."

Pichai makes an interesting point about how broad the market is for Android. It is true the platform has to cater for a wider breadth of price points and is available for devices of all qualities. Security issues as a result are going to be worse than Apple, who admittedly make just high end (the $100,000 Mercedes) products.

However, while Pichai is defending Android he is also clearly admitting that there are security issues on the platform. Sure, that may be because Android is spread out and more popular, but still the threats are there. Of course, he also says that from the ground up Android is secure, basically saying that once it is in the hands of third parties anything can happen. That is almost washing your hands of the issue, just like he suggests Apple is doing by having total control.

This argument is nothing new and is essentially the old debate about whether the restricted ecosystem of Apple or the open Android platform is best. There is little doubt that in terms of security Apple is in front, and Pichai is essentially admitting that in this interview.

Apple strikes another blow in Samsung war

Apple strikes another blow in Samsung war

Apple's patent war with Samsung seems like the tech saga that will never end. Just when you think a conclusion has been reached, it starts again and rumbles on for months. For example, Apple defeated Samsung in the recent closing of their trial after a jury deemed Samsung stole patents from Cupertino. However, Apple does not agree with the compensation amount and is likely to push ahead for another trial in the future. Continuing the epic today is the news that Samsung has been forced to cough up more cash because of the lawsuit.

This time the Korean company and its lawyers will have to pay $2 million after they revealed sensitive information about Apple's and Nokia's own patent agreements. Documents about the Apple/Nokia relationship were handed to Samsung's lawyers Quinn Emanuel to show that Cupertino was telling the truth about its other deals. The documents were "for attorney's eyes only" but somehow they found their way to Samsung's executives.

This of course gave Samsung full knowledge of the deal between Apple and Nokia, with the Korean company quoting exact terms of the arrangement when it was negotiating with Nokia. The court agreed with Apple and Nokia on the matter and found the lawyers and Samsung "(1) failure to institute sufficient safeguards for third-party confidential information, and (2) failure to comply with the notice and cooperation requirements set forth in Section 18(a) of the protective order entered in this case."

The fact that the court thought Apple's and Nokia's requested compensation was fair worked in the companies' favour. "With the limited exceptions described above, the court finds that the remaining costs and fees requested by Apple and Nokia are reasonable and shall be awarded. No later than 30 days from this order, Samsung and QE are to pay Nokia a total of $1,145,027.95 and Apple a total of $893,825.77 in fees and costs."

Judge Koh expresses worry over Apple’s settlement plans in poaching case

aPPLE POACHING CASE

Judge Lucy Koh has become something of a tech celebrity because of her involvement in major court cases in the industry, most notably the patent war between Apple and Samsung. Today Judge Koh has weighed in on another matter that concerns Cupertino by saying she has reservations about a settlement reached by Apple and rival companies as part of a class action suit regarding anti-poaching agreements.

Apple and the other companies involved in the action struck a deal to pay class members US$324.5 million in one lump sum to be divided. While that seems like a huge figure, it only actually equates to around $10,000 for each plaintiff in the case, and is significantly lower than the $3 billion being sought if the case went to trial.

The case stems from a "secret" agreement between Apple and other tech juggernauts such as Google and Adobe that they would not take employees from each other. This in business terms is called poaching and it happens regularly, but the companies agreed under the table that they would not engage in it with each other. Employees said that their negotiating power was then hugely decreased and they ultimately lost percentages of salary through pay cuts.

"I just have concerns about whether this is really fair to the class," Koh said as she believes the plaintiffs have plenty of leverage to seek either a larger amount or to go to trial. Her assessment would be right as there is damning evidence against the ring of companies, including letters from high up executives such as Steve Jobs.

Koh is tasked with making a decision whether to approve the deal or not, but on today's evidence we think the case could rumble on.
