Apple loses to Chinese company in Siri patent case Posted: 09 Jul 2014 08:06 AM PDT When it comes to fighting patent claims in the courts against Samsung, Apple has enjoyed success, but the company is having less joy in China. Cupertino has lost a case in Beijing with the court ruling against Apple and upholding a patent claim made by a Chinese company over voice recognition technology used in the Siri personal assistant found on iOS devices Apple had actually taken Shanghai-based Zhizhen Internet Technology and China's State Intellectual Property Office to court after Zhizhen made a claim that Siri infringed its patents. Apple disagreed and sought a ruling to make Zhizhen's patent rights to use the technology invalid. However, today's result in the Chinese company's favour means that it can continue using the tech, while the company can now pursue its own case against Apple for the patent infringement. Apple will not let it end like that as the company will now take the case to the Beijing Higher People's Court, while Cupertino is still doubting the validity of the claim. "Unfortunately, we were not aware of Zhizhen's patent before we introduced Siri (speech recognition technology) and we do not believe we are using this patent," said a Beijing-based Apple spokeswoman in an emailed statement to Reuters. "While a separate court considers this question, we remain open to reasonable discussions with Zhizhen." The Chinese company has not responded to Apple's offer of finding a resolution, we reached out to Zhizhen today to find out if an agreement with Cupertino could be reached. It is unclear whether Apple would have to make changes to Siri, remove the software in China, or pay damages if it were to lose the patent case. [VIA]
