'Death Road to Canada' Gets a New Gameplay Video, Expect More of Them in the Future Posted: 28 Oct 2014 12:08 PM PDT In August of last year, Rocketcat Games and Madgarden announced their latest collaboration project called Death Road to Canada, a "Randomized Permadeath Road Trip Simulator." Basically, the goal of the game was to make it from Florida to Canada during a zombie apocalypse, making "choose-your-own-adventure" style choices along the way and interspersed with real-time action sequences where you'd fight off zombies and collect resources. It sounded incredibly awesome, and being that this was the same developer collaboration that brought us Punch Quest , there was every reason to be very excited for Death Road to Canada. Unfortunately, Death Road to Canada's intended release window was October of last year, and here we are a year later and still no game. Understandable seeing as both Madgarden and Rocketcat have been quite busy with other projects, but disappointing nonetheless. However, on this anniversary of my shattered dreams of playing this game, the developers have posted a brand new look at Death Road to Canada, as well as a promise to be more open with its continued development. Check out the video.
As you may be aware, Death Road to Canada is the product of a successful Kickstarter, and one of the reasons updates on the game's progress have been scarce is because a lot of that info has been backer-only up to this point. Going forward, and being that the game is close to entering a larger private beta involving the backers, development progress will be put out for the public to consume, much like this latest video has. The goal is to get the game finished for release on Steam, and then about a month following that, get it out for iOS, according to Madgarden on Twitter. No concrete dates have been given for when the game will hit Steam, and subsequently iOS, but the developers have been pretty faithful in updating the Steam community on about a monthly basis on where progress is at. Hopefully, the forthcoming beta goes smoothly and Death Road to Canada won't be too far off, but at the very least expect more news on its progress as Madgarden and Rocketcat pull back the curtain more on its development. |
'Galcon 2' Enters "Fan-Premier Launch" on Desktop and Android, Coming to iOS Soon Posted: 28 Oct 2014 10:52 AM PDT Looking forward to playing Galcon 2? Well, you still have a ways to go before you can play it on iOS, but the game is out now in a . This is something between a full public launch and a public beta – Developer Phil Hassey says this is the game leaving beta, but the game's not quite out on retail stores, he's just self-distributing the game at this moment. But you can go and register an account and play the game right now, just not quite on iOS yet (though he's distributing Testflight copies to his testers). The plan is for Galcon 2 to hit the App Store down the road, though. But if you want to take Galcon 2 for a spin right now, you can register a GalconID and have your progress carry over to the iOS version. Online play is a big feature here, as you can play others in free-for-all and team modes, with the familiar planet-conquering gameplay the series is known for. The game will be free-to-play, with in-game currency used to buy customizations and to support your clan through a betting system. We'll be keeping an eye out for when this hits iOS, but if you have the means, check it out right now! |
HeroCraft's 'Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf' Now Available Worldwide Posted: 28 Oct 2014 09:54 AM PDT Last week we told you that Herocraft's tactical turn-based strategy game set in the Warhammer universe would be launching worldwide on October 28th. And do you know what today is? The 28th! Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf [Free] is now officially available. Space Wolf is a turn-based strategy game with a heavy card element, but this isn't some card battler. People have likened it to the Metal Gear Ac!d series on the PSP, which is basically all I need to hear to download and check it out.
Alongside the worldwide launch Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf has also received an update which added Universal support for iPhones, an intro video, and lots of tweaks to both the early missions and user interface stuff. The game had been in soft-launch for about a month, and the impressions from people in our forums have been largely positive, even more so it seems since more people are able to download and play. And hey, since it's a free download there's no reason not to try out Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf now that it's out worldwide. |
'Bitcoin Billionaire' from Noodlecake is the Hottest Way to Mine Fake Bitcoins Since 'Hodappy Bird' Posted: 28 Oct 2014 08:12 AM PDT When it comes to games where it's possible to mine fake bitcoins, the undisputed leader in the field has to be Hodappy Bird [Free]. However, Noodlecake Games and FizzPow Games are ready to pull some oneupmanship with their upcoming game Bitcoin Billionaire. Coming soon, this is a satirical take on 'clicker' games where rapidly tapping the screen will mine them sweet, sweet, fake currency. Or, in this case, fake fake currency. The more bitcoins you mine, the more upgrades you can buy, allowing you to mine while the game is closed, and to mine faster. There will be plenty of cosmetic upgrades to get as well, because you gotta mine them bitcoins in style, like with special hats, and also a kitty. Kitties are the ultimate accessory for bitcoin miners.
The game's not just going to feature goofy fake fake currency collection, but also an opt-in ad system for not just incentivized video, but also rewards for enabling banner ads. We live in a strange era. Sadly, you can't mine actual bitcoins with this game; we're just not ready for that radical of a future. The game's currently in the hands of Apple, so pending approval, it'll be out soon. |
'Final Fantasy VII G-Bike' Hits The Japanese App Store October 30th Posted: 28 Oct 2014 07:26 AM PDT With Square Enix's planned streaming games service, Dive In, put on hold, what's a mobile gamer to do to get their Final Fantasy 7 fix? Well, it's not much of a consolation prize, but it looks like Final Fantasy 7 G-Bike is finally ready for release and will be hitting the Japanese App Store this Thursday, October 30th. The game is an expanded version of the motorcycle mini-game that you first play when escaping from Midgar and later can enjoy at your leisure at the Golden Saucer amusement park. Naturally, it's been changed to an endless driving format, with Cloud now able to slide or jump his motorbike to avoid obstacles.
The game will be free to download, with premium currency IAP that can be used to unlock new materia and items. Materia can be fitted to Cloud's bike to enable him to use various types of magic, while the items are probably going to be pretty familiar to endless runner fans. The game apparently features a variety of missions to complete, including battles against familiar bosses and characters. Before you ask, it also appears to include stamina meters and multiple currencies, and will most likely require online check-ins, but that's just speculation until the game is in our hands. While I haven't had the chance to personally put my hands on G-Bike yet, I have heard good things from those that have. Of course, there's a difference between playing a game like this in a brief show and tell session and actually sitting down to give it a proper run-through. We'll be doing just that when the game releases this Thursday, and will give you some detailed impressions as soon as possible. There's no official word yet on when we can expect this game to release worldwide, so keep watching for further details as they come. |
'King of Dragon Pass' Developers Working on Spiritual Successor, 'Six Ages' Posted: 27 Oct 2014 03:00 PM PDT A# (A Sharp) released King of Dragon Pass [$9.99], set in the same role-playing world as HeroQuest and RuneQuest, the world of Glorantha. This is a world that stretches back to 1966, when the only role-playing games were done on tabletops. Well, A# has announced that they are working on a brand new game set in the world of Glorantha, Six Ages. The plan is for this to be a spiritual successor to King of Dragon Pass, attempting to keep in the tradition of that game's blend of various elements, like role-playing, resource management, and decisions with long-ranging effects. Six Ages is very early in development, and isn't planned to release until 2016 at the earliest. If you never played King of Dragon Pass, the game will be going on sale for 50% off its $9.99 price for $4.99 starting on October 29th. Pretty much every version of the game, not just the iOS one, will be going on sale, if you wind up preferring this on another platform. We were huge fans of the game back when it released in 2011, and since the review, it's been updated to be universal with iPad support, so if you're looking for a big, beefy experience that can be a slow burn, this is worth checking out. |
Check Out This 'Hail to the King: Deathbat' Soundtrack Behind the Scenes Video and iOS Alert Sounds Posted: 27 Oct 2014 02:00 PM PDT Despite being an oddly polarizing title in our community, we really dig Hail to the King: Deathbat [$4.99]. We posted a review and made it out game of the week. Now, we've got a behind the scenes video featuring M Shadows and Zacky Vengeance from Avenged Sevenfold talking about the sound design of the game in front of an incredibly impressive array of Mortal Kombat machines. Check it out:
The cool part of going behind the game and getting a chance to actually talk to M Shadows about the game and seeing this video is the realization that despite being rock stars at the end of the day these dudes are just old school gamers. It seems like a lot of the time in mobile games, soundtracks and sound effects are just an afterthought that get filled in with whatever is cheap and royalty free. The music in Hail to the King: Deathbat is really awesome, particularly if you recognize some of the original songs when playing. Here's some of the sound effects that M Shadows mentions in the video, I re-encoded them to work as iOS alerts if that's the kind of thing you're in to: Download those files, add 'em to iTunes, and you should be able to sync them over to your iOS device pretty easily to use as text message alerts, new email sounds, or whatever else you want to use them for. |
