Marvel and Kabam's Mobile Brawler 'Marvel Contest of Champions' Soft-Launched in Denmark

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 12:49 PM PDT

At the San Diego Comic-Con back in July, Marvel and Kabam announced an upcoming mobile fighter set in the Marvel universe called Marvel Contest of Champions. Over the weekend, the game was soft-launched in the Danish App Store. From the early impressions in our forums, it sounds like Marvel Contest of Champions is a pared down fighter similar to Warner Bros. and DC's Injustice: Gods Among Us [Free], though with slightly more complex fighting mechanics. Here's the original reveal trailer from the San Diego Comic-Con.

If you happen to be in Denmark, or have access to a Danish App Store account, you can give Marvel Contest of Champions a download for free from the link below. Also, today is the start of the New York Comic-Con, and Kabam has said previously that the game will be at that show and playable, so if you're attending be sure to seek it out. No word on when a full worldwide release will be, though I'd be pretty stoked if they decided to flip the switch during Comic-Con this week, but until then check out the soft-launch version and we'll let you know when Kabam reveals when it's heading to the US and elsewhere.

Stumble Along as a Spider in 'Daddy Long Legs', Now Available for Free on iOS

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 10:50 AM PDT

Back in mid-August, we "stumbled" across a trailer for a quirky new game from developer Set Snail called Daddy Long Legs [Free]. Like QWOP [$0.99] and many other awkward physics-based games that task you with doing everyday things like, uh, walking, Daddy Long Legs sees your furry, square-ish hero trying to walk as far as possible with his ridiculously long legs. Simply tapping on the screen alternates which leg Daddy puts forward, so careful timing and a whole lot of luck are required in order to make it any significant distance.

In a very cool touch, all of your Game Center friends' high score marks are laid out in the path before you, so there's a nice competitive element. There's also Everyplay integration so if you have a particularly silly run you can share the replay for all the world to enjoy. Also, despite the name of the game, you don't actually play as a spider (unless you're a spider who's had the unfortunate fate of having six of his legs ripped off), so arachnophobes like myself can safely play without getting the heebie jeebies.

Daddy Long Legs is free, and as far as I can tell there are no ads or any other restrictions to playing. It's just a silly free game. In fact "silly" is the best word I can think of to describe Daddy Long Legs. It's ultra-simple and surprisingly difficult, but I've had plenty of laugh out loud moments just in my brief time with it so far watching Daddy stumble and land flat on his face or taking too long of a stride and slowly doing a painful looking splits. I'm also bound and determined to beat my Game Center friends' records, so I imagine I'll be spending a good portion of my day flopping one leg in front of the other with plenty of faceplants mixed in. Daddy Long Legs is free so check it out, and drop by the forums to leave us your thoughts or share some replays.

Update: I've been told there are supposed to be banner ads at the top of the screen, but, they're not appearing for me at all. Not sure if something is broke or what, but it's worth noting.

'The Room Two' Is The Best Dollar You'll Spend Today (If You Don't Already Have It)

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 08:28 AM PDT

I've said it before, and I've got absolutely no problem saying it again and again: The Room [Free / $0.99 (HD)] and The Room Two [$0.99] are among the finest games available on the App Store. The first installment is free on the iPhone (with a 99 cent purchase to unlock the rest of the game) and The Room proper for iPad has also been a buck for quite some time now. The Room Two has been on sale before, most recently this summer, but I'm not one to pass up on an opportunity to remind everyone to download these games again.

We reviewed both games, with The Room getting four stars because it was a little too short when it launched (this has been fixed with updates), and The Room Two receiving a solid five stars for being better in every way.

You won't really miss out on much by jumping straight into the second game, but I still think the first is very much worth playing. Whether you play it before of after The Room Two is up to you. If for some insane reason you still haven't gotten these games, now is your chance.

'Super Meat Boy'-like 'Glue Knight' is Free Again

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Glue Knight [Free] has had a weird life on the App Store so far. It was released for free in late August as a sleeper indie game no one paid much attention to, then folks figured out it was actually really good and it seemed like the developer upped the price to 99¢ when he saw the downloads start to spike. Well, the game is free once again, so if you missed it the first time around as a freebie, here's your chance.

We talked about the game on episode 171 of our podcast and reviewed it, but the easiest way to describe it is a Super Meatboy-like. It feels like everything in this game kills you, which (for me, anyway) typically just winds up in you laughing at yourself as you get farther than you ever have in a level only to just instantly die on the next obstacle you encounter.

If you like difficult games, definitely snag this freebie. Also, keep in mind you can choose any area in the level select screen, so make sure you try a bunch of levels before deleting it if you find yourself getting frustrated.

iOS 8.1 Will Close Date Loophole That Allows Non-Jailbreak Emulators to Be Installed

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 06:39 AM PDT

If you're willing to jailbreak, you've basically got pick of the litter when it comes to which of the vast array of emulators on your iOS device. If you're not into the whole jailbreak scene but still are interested in emulation, things aren't so easy.

There's basically three ways for the stock firmware crew to get emulators:

  1. Wait for an app to get approved with secret emulator functionality and hope you're lucky enough to grab it before Apple pulls it.

  2. Settle into using one of the web-based emulators out there and just come to grips with the overall experience not being that great.

  3. Use one of the several emulators out there that exploit a expired enterprise certificate using what's typically been referred to as "the date trick."

#3 of the above list historically has been by far the most reliable. All you have to do it point your browser to gba4iosapp.com, go in your phone's date settings and roll your clock back, and then install the emulator. It's quick and simple, and is by far the easiest way for non-developers to get things on their phone that Apple would never approve for sale on the App Store.

Problem is, as pointed out by our pals at PocketGamer this morning, iOS 8.1 beta testers are reporting that Apple has finally closed this loophole. Unsurprisingly, the emulator community isn't too happy about this. As GBA4iOS beta tester Dario Sepulveda writes:

The Date Trick fuels the emulator communities nowadays, iEmulators.com relies on this to continue distribution. Without it, everything looks bleak. Without GBA4iOS 2.0, everything seems… well, sad. Will iOS 8.0.2 become our perpetual purgatory so that we can continue to enjoy these things?

On one hand, as someone who loves emulation and has played what's likely upwards of 100 hours worth of classic SNES RPGs on my iPad mini, this really blows. On the other, I can totally understand why Apple would do this. When it seems like you can hardly read the news anymore without hearing about some massive security breach, Apple needs to keep iOS secure- Particularly with how much they enjoy boasting about all the security issues and malware Android has during keynotes.

…It just sucks that emulators have been caught in the crossfire. Assuming this change in the 8.1 beta makes it out to the final 8.1 release later this month, emulation fans are going to be left with few options beyond just staying on iOS 8.0.2 forever, hoping for a new loophole, just saying screw it and jailbreaking, or paying the $99 yearly fee to become an iOS developer to just to be able to sign and install emulators yourself.

Unfortunately, none of those solutions are as simple as rolling your clock back.

Check Out the Trailer for the Upcoming 'Superhyper' from Sets and Settings

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Sets and Settings, the creators of Irrupt [$0.99] and the upcoming Trestle, a Super Crate Box meets Mega Man Battle Network game that they're quietly hammering away on, are about to release their latest title to the App Store, Superhyper. This is a rather challenging lane-based endless runner, as players must try to survive an onslaught of tricky layouts and oncoming blocks, using only lane-switching and a short warp forward to dodge them. Scoring is all about how long you can last – and getting into triple digits is not an easy task.

This promises to be an endless runner for people who want a difficult, purist challenge in the vein of Super Hexagon [$2.99], rather than the upgrade-fests of games like Subway Surfers. [Free] Which isn't a knock on them, but the joy of minimalist games is that they put as few barriers between a player's skill and their performance as possible.

Superhyper Announce

The game boasts three different difficulty modes: Super, Hyper, and Superhyper, with multiple control schemes, and an up-tempo soundtrack provided by IsYourGuy. This is a game that fans of challenging minimalist arcade games, not to mention pixel art, should keep an eye on as prerelease builds have shown promise for a really fun final product. The game's been submitted to the App Store and should be out soon after approval.

'Animal Crossing'-alike 'Castaway Paradise' Launching Worldwide this Thursday

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 02:40 PM PDT

Stolen Couch's upcoming sim Castaway Paradise has been in the works for almost two and a half years, or at least that's when the upcoming thread in our forum was originally started, but at long last we'll be getting the final product this Thursday October 9th, the developers have announced. Castaway Paradise is a sim heavily influenced by the Animal Crossing series, and will contain many similar features like decorating your home, donning different outfits, fishing, growing crops, collecting bugs and much more. It'll also run on a real-time clock and there will be special events associated with time and seasons. You can see many of those features in action in the game's launch trailer.

Castaway Paradise has been in development for quite a while, but it's been available in soft-launch form since late November of last year. Reading through the soft-launch thread in our forum, it looks like the developers have taken a lot of early players' feedback into consideration, and it seems like the game has shaped up nicely because of it. One big feature that has made it into the final version is Universal support for iPhones and iPod touches; originally Castaway Paradise was an iPad-only title. I'm excited to check it out, so look for the worldwide launch of Castaway Paradise right alongside all of the week's other new releases on Wednesday night.

Noodlecake Games Announces Upcoming 'MMM Fingers' from Developers of 'Small Fry'

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 01:53 PM PDT

No Monkeys, the creators of The Adventures of Small Fry [Free], and prolific indie publisher Noodlecake Games have announced their newest game, MMM Fingers, coming later this month. This is a survival game where the goal is to use your finger to drag around the screen, trying to avoid spiked, teethy objects that will be game over. While the game is definitely meant to be a small game that's highly replayable, the creators are aiming for a higher level of polish than most, say, Flappy Bird or Timberman [Free / $0.99] clones. The trailer shows off the animation and detail put into the graphics quite well:

As well, the game will feature music by venerable iOS indie game composer and Pivvot [$2.99] creator Whitaker Trebella. MMM Fingers will be free-to-play with ad support, but the plan is for there to be no revives or other ways to boost score, in order to keep the leaderboards pure. Expect the game sometime this month. Between this and the promised Flappy Golf [Free] update, Noodlecake is also hinting that more from them is coming down the pipeline, which you're sure to hear about quite soon.
