Bono’s “attack” on Apple was tongue in cheek Posted: 26 Jun 2014 01:07 PM PDT Whether it was a ribbing, fake outrage, or flat out moaning, Bono's comments about Apple's charitable work this week generated plenty of column inches in the tech world and beyond. The rock star, U2 frontman, and notable sunglasses wearer had the following to say about Apple while at the Cannes Lions presentation with Apple designer Jony Ive. "One of the reasons it's such a credit to have Jony Ive on the stage is because Apple is so f--king annoyingly quiet about the fact they've raised $75 million. Nobody knows!" Bono shouted before pulling out an official RED iPad cover and explaining how hard it is to see the organizations logo. "Where's the (Red) branding?" Bono asked Ive. "Nobody can see that. This is modesty run amok. This is the Apple way. They're like a religious cult." Bono was referencing Apple's involvement with his non-profit organization RED, a project that combats AIDS and other illnesses in Africa. The singer was talking about Apple's downplaying of its role in the raising of money for the organization. On paper the quote looks like a fairly angry slam at Apple, especially considering Ive was there with Bono. However, RED has moved today to say Bono has been misinterpreted in the press and it was actually a joke that Ive was aware of. "During the session, Bono teased Jony about Apple's modesty and reluctance to take credit for its charitable work, including the whopping $75 million Apple has donated to the fight against AIDS through its partnership with (RED). In a reminder that humour doesn't always travel out of context, some of Bono's teasing and faux outrage at Apple's modesty were reported as actual criticism of the company. Nothing could be further from the truth of course. Bono has been one of Apple's biggest supporters, pushing back publicly on those who have made negative assumptions about the company's charitable work, simply because they don't shout it from the rooftops. That modesty is their right, and in many ways admirable. Bono and all of us at (RED) are so grateful to Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, Jony Ive and the entire Apple team for the game-changing impact they have made for (RED) and the fight against this disease." So was Bono joking or is this RED back peddling to avoid pissing off ones of its biggest backers? Possibly a little bit of both. Bono has defended Apple in the past, most notably by sending an open letter to the New York Times defending Steve Jobs and his willingness to give money to good causes. However, the fact the U2 frontman actually whipped out a case on stage suggests he does have some axe, however small, to grind with Apple's modesty. [VIA]

Apple to release cheaper iPod Touch with camera Posted: 26 Jun 2014 09:10 AM PDT The iPod was the product that revitalized Apple at the turn of the century and the iPod Touch is probably the best music player on the market. The Touch is set to get a cheaper version update next week. Without the huge success of the iPod (now called the iPod classic) Apple would not be in the position it is in today and you would probably not be fiddling with an iPhone or iPad. However, the iPod is the dying business in Apple's line up with sales shrinking on a quarterly basis as the need for a dedicated music player fades. The iPod Touch is the jewel in Apple's iPod crown, basically an iPhone but without any of the cool phone bits, the Touch lets you use apps, browse the internet, message with Wi-Fi, and take photos. It is a smartMP3 player in the way the iPhone is a smartphone. It also boasts a slick aesthetic that makes it stand out from the crowd. The problem for the Touch is that even the most basic of smartphones now do all the things it can do, and more. They may not all do them better, but there is simply little need for a dedicated music player no matter how good it is. Apple knows this and is trying to wring every last penny from its iPod business before shuttering it one day. The iPod Touch flagship is an expensive beast for what it is, but it does offer a slew of features including an 8 megapixel rear camera and 32GB of storage. The entry level 16GB Touch eschews both the snapper and the colourful panels of the flagship, but Apple is updating this cheaper version. Reports suggest the company will roll out a new iPod Touch 16GB next week with all the pretty colors in tow, but more importantly with the 8MP camera also along for the ride. On top of that the company will knock $30 off the asking price, placing the iPod Touch into the realms of an impulse buy. While it is unlikely to save the iPod business in the long term, a price cut and added features could give the iPod line one last hurrah. [VIA]
