What if your iPhone could create stronger friendship bonds?
Swarm is a new iOS application released by the Foursquare that does something that we haven’t seen before.
It’s kinda like Foursquare, but with lots of new features that let you and your friends catch up by finding new places to check in, discovering new events, finding if you’re both in the same neighborhood and sharing the common places you visit.
Though it takes a lot from Foursquare, such as the ability to check in places, it also relies on passive location information that notifies you if someone is nearby, without requiring a check-in.
How to use Swarm for iOS
After installation, you can use your email, your Facebook account, or your current Foursquare login to sign-in. Swarm will keep your Foursquare and the lists it creates separate if you log-in using Foursquare. Then you’ll receive a few instructions on how the app works.
There are four tabs in the main screen, which you can navigate by tapping on any tab’s icon or with a left or right swipe. Location sharing can be disabled through the neighborhood sharing toggle at the top left corner of the screen.
Swarm has a feeds section that keeps you updated on what your friends are posting, where they are, and the events happening nearby. You can access the profile of any friend and make plans of meeting.
There’s a social map that shows friends in your vicinity, and it even sometimes show what they’re up to. You can type in queries like who’s up for lunch tomorrow – this will make the app send push notifications to your friends.
Apart from plans, the app lets you share your own neighborhood so that friends nearby can know what you’re up to. Swarm utilizes location services to find your location. It also has notifications that keep you updated with all activity (a friend accepting your meetup invitation, for example).
Final thoughts
Swarm could go on to become a favorite amongst iPhone users considering its social functionality. Apart from its effect on battery life, it works seamlessly.
You can download Swarm free of cost from the App Store. Leave your comments if you happen to try it out.
