The Facebook Messenger app is apparently set up to allow friends to send each other money, should Facebook choose to flip the switch. The payment capabilities were found by Stanford computer science student Andrew Aude as we was looking through the code of the iOS app. It appears that users can add debit cards to the app, sending money to each other in a conversation just as they would send a picture.
From TechCrunch:
Messenger's payment option lets users can send money in a message similar to how they can send a photo. Users can add a debit card in Messenger, or use one they already have on file with Facebook. An in-app pincode also exists for added security around payments.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously stated that there would be an overlap between Messenger and payments at some point. A Facebook payment service through Messenger would set up the social network to compete with the likes of PayPal and Square.
