The Truth is Out There - 'Surgeon Simulator' Updated with Alien Autopsy Content Posted: 30 May 2014 12:34 PM PDT Back in March, Bossa Studios brought their hit, medically inaccurate surgeon simulation game Surgeon Simulator [$5.99 (HD)] to the iPad. It was strange though. You'd think a game that has you virtually handling tools to perform operations would translate better to the touchscreen of the iPad, giving everything a more direct and personal feel. But that wasn't really the case. It turns out the awkwardness of using individual keys on a keyboard to control your surgeon's hand was a big part of the charm of Surgeon Simulator, and while the iPad does feel intentionally awkward in its own way, it just wasn't quite the same. However, the iPad version of Surgeon Simulator is still a hoot and it's fun to be able to take it with you on the go. This week, Surgeon Simulator on the iPad got even better as it was updated with the alien autopsy content that hit the desktop version last year. Yes, poor Bob the patient gets to take a break as you tear into the body of Gworb the alien. Gworb's body is filled with "six impossible-to-pronounce organs that you'll need to replace in order to patch him up and send him on his way" according to the App Description, which also means there's six new achievements to shoot for. This update also continues Bossa's efforts of optimizing the game for older devices, and they specifically point out that Surgeon Simulator should run much better on the iPad 3. Surgeon Simulator is definitely one of the sillier, more over-the-top-gruseome-but-in-a-lighthearted-way games you can play. It's totally bonkers, really. If you own an iPad and want a zany experience for it, definitely check it out, especially now that you can carve up a little alien. |
There's an iOS 8 Banner Being Hung at Moscone for WWDC Posted: 30 May 2014 11:42 AM PDT As pointed out by our sister site, MacRumors, Business Insider's Jay Yarow snapped a photo of what very likely is a banner for iOS 8. Apple typically reveals new operating system details at WWDC, as it's a developer-oriented event, and it'd make a lot of sense for iOS 8 to take up a major portion of the keynote. (Which Apple is streaming live!)
It's anyone's guess what iOS 8 could include, there's always some new killer features, but I'd be really happy if they expanded Game Center. Apple's online leaderboard service has been super light on its feature set since it launched, and it'd be really sweet if they brought it more in line with what people expect of these kind of things. If nothing else, I'd love to be able to message my Game Center friends without revealing my iMessage ID or phone number. Either way, we'll find everything out on Monday, so stay tuned. |
'The Wolf Among Us' Episode 4 "In Sheep's Clothing" is Now Available Posted: 30 May 2014 11:08 AM PDT Just a quick heads up to let you know that the fourth episode of Telltale Games' excellent adventure game The Wolf Among Us [$4.99], which Telltale began teasing us about last week, is now available to download from within the game. Like previous episodes, it'll set you back $4.99 if you're buying them one at a time, or will simply be ready to download if you've bought the season pass. This fourth episode is titled "In Sheep's Clothing" and you can get a gist of what it's all about in the following trailer (spoilers, obviously).
If you haven't yet indulged in The Wolf Among Us and are wondering what it's all about, we've covered the first two episodes of the game in our review, and we'll be withholding food and water from our reviewer until he adds in content from the third and fourth episodes. However, the tl;dr is that The Wolf Among Us is another excellent adventure from Telltale, and if you like gritty takes on classic fairy tales you should definitely check it out. The fifth and final episode should be hitting sometime later this year, and we'll have more details on that when they're available. |
'Candy Crush' Made More Money Than All Nintendo Games Combined Last Quarter Posted: 30 May 2014 09:17 AM PDT While many folks on the internet felt the death knell of Mythic yesterday was a stab to the heart of free to play, recent numbers from the market research outfit Newzoo put in to perspective just how insanely successful the top-end of the free to play world is. Sure, you see these games on the top of the top grossing charts but it's unreal to consider the scale of things when compared to long-running household brands in video gaming. As pointed out by A List Daily, in Q1 of 2014, Candy Crush grossed more money than all Nintendo games combined. Sure, that's easy to rationalize by saying "Well Nintendo didn't have any big releases and Q4 is where they make all their cash," but the fact remains, that's a mind-blowing thing to be able to report. They're not ahead by a small margin either, King is making 56% more money than Nintendo. King has mentioned in the past that Candy Crush generates 2/3 of their revenue, so, that game alone is beating everything Nintendo did. It's a curious time to be alive as a gamer, as if you're 30-something or older right now, you grew up with the NES and Nintendo has likely played a massive part in both your overall life as well as contributing to your personal identity as a gamer. It's odd to see the company falling farther and farther behind in financials, because, come on, it's Nintendo. I'd love to see an alternate universe where Nintendo was similarly riding the mobile gaming tidal wave, just to see how much these reports would change. I mean, my grandma knows Nintendo IP, that combined with something along the same lines as Candy Crush in regards to a free game with nearly universal appeal would be insane I'm sure. But, maybe that could be an episode for a future Sliders series reboot. [via A List Daily] |
Apple Posts New Indie Game Showcase Featuring 'Threes!' Posted: 29 May 2014 03:23 PM PDT If you don't cruise iTunes featuring on the reg', you might've missed a new feature that Apple is doing where the pull out a particularly great indie studio and both highlight their games as well as favorite games of the developers. Simogo was the first developer to do this, and we weren't entirely sure if it was going to be a one-off by Apple or a regular thing... But it'd seem we now have our answer. The star of the show this time around is Threes! [$1.99].
Given the 2048 drama, it's pretty great seeing Threes! getting a little extra love. Additionally, Apple points out the awesome Puzzlejuice [$1.99] as the other game made by Sirvo. They also cooked up a list of a dozen games that you can basically just blindly download as they're all fantastic:
I wonder who will be next for Apple's Indie Game Showcase? |
