The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

We’ve covered a lot of camera and editing apps that apply filter and do a little more.

But Camu still managed to catch our attention. It’s an app that features like filters that can be edited later and it has one of the best feature sets available in any photo app for iPhone.

When you take a photo, you get to apply live filters. The app is compatible with the front camera, features a timer, and lets you add text to images in four different fonts.

It also enables you to capture and arrange images in a collage, angle or straighten a photo, include a tilt-shift effects, and share the photo over social media or email.

How to use Camu for iOS

After installing the app, you can swipe to switch between filters. The controls at the view finder’s bottom let you enable lash, select a point of focus, set a timer and switch to the front camera. And this is where you also activate a collage.

Camu doesn’t specifically let you make a collage like other similar apps but it enables a user to split the screen between the two, diagonally and vertically. Once a photo has been snapped, it can be edited further. If a live filter hasn’t been applied, you can still apply one after snapping a photo by swiping on the next screen.

The bottom of the screen features editing tools for adding or removing the date of the image, straightening the photo, adding text, and managing depth of field. The effect of the text is pretty smooth; you can enter custom text and select between four different founts.

Also, you can use the ‘Slogan’ option to add popular quotes to the image if you’re out of ideas for captions. The app has four styles for text; black with white highlight, all white, all black, and white with black highlight. There are no more color customization options.

Once you’re done with editing, you can go to the next screen and choose the app you want to share the image to. Camu will save a copy of the image by default to your photostream. The app does not post directly to other networks but opens the image in respective apps so you can edit before the image is shared.

Final thoughts

Camu may not be considered as an Instagram rival but it can be used alongside it. The app even brings a dedicated square photo size option that makes using images easier when you want to share on Instagram.

You can download Camu free of cost from the App Store and leave your thoughts if you give it a try. It works on iOS 7 and above.
