iPhone 6 launch drove a quarter billion dollars in accessory sales in two weeks

The launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were bonanzas for Apple, with more than 10 million devices sold in the first weekend, but the new devices were also a huge boon to mobile device accessory makers. According to an analysis by the NPD Group, accessory sales in the two weeks following the new iPhones' September 19th launch surged by 43%, hitting $249 million.

For comparison's sake, the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c a year saw a more modest (but still substantial) bump of 17% to $195 million for the two weeks that followed.

Unsurprisingly, it was screen protectors and cases that drove the majority of the increase:

Screen protector revenue increased 120 percent versus the pre-launch period, and cases increased 78 percent in revenue and 63 percent in units. Other accessory categories saw growth, but not near the levels of the protection devices; revenue for mobile power products grew 5 percent, headphones with microphones were up 10 percent, and Bluetooth speakers increased 5 percent.

You can, of course, check out a wide variety of accessories for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, including cases, pouches, headphones, and more, at the iMore Store.
