The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

I don’t know about you all but I personally enjoy looking at the settings and tools people used in order to create particular images I like. You couldn’t read such data and more on your iPhone before however this has been made possible through the ViewExif app, which I found to be very useful and easy to use.

For those of you who don’t know ‘exif’ is an abbreviation of Exchangeable Image File. This is a standard when it comes to storing interchange information present in digital image files through JPEG compression.

The ViewExif app/extension, as the name implies, allows users to view the EXIF data for any photo from the Photo app. Even if you don’t know how to use extension apps before, you will find ViewExif easy to use. When you launch the app you will be met with a brief visual tutorial.

How to use ViewExif for iPhone

All you need to do is launch the Photos app and then tap the image you want to read the EXIF data for. Then tap the share button and from there enable the ViewExif option. Now you will see the ViewExif option appear as one of the actions whenever you tap the share button.

The information this little app is able to present is quite impressive. By tapping the ViewExif option the app will display the image name, dimensions, size, ISO speed, Camera make, Camera model, Focal length, depth, and upon availability it will also show the image orientation and the DPI height and width.

The app doesn’t show location data for the selected image. There are also no editing options present which can allow you to change the exif data of the original photo. However, you can create a new copy of the image with edited exif data.

The app also helps with privacy protection. When you share images on various social media sites or email them to friends and family, they can view date & time stamps as well as the geo location. Through ViewExif, this location metadata can be removed before you share a photo, keeping your location private.

This app extension works for the Photos app, and even 3rd party apps such as Google Drive, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, FileExplorer, etc. The image formats it supports include JPG, PNG, TIFF, CR2, and NEF.

Final verdict about the app

I found it to be very useful not only when it came to discovering exif data for images but also for making copies of images without such data when I want to share them with other people. So if you’re in the same boat, you’ll love the features of this app.

You can download ViewExif for $0.99 from the App Store. It works on iOS 8.0 and above. Let us know if you give it a try and feel free to leave comments.
