You might be sharing a lot more than you bargained for when you upload a picture on social media sites. If you’ve enabled the location services for your iPhone camera app then each photo you take from your iDevice will contain a geotag and other location metadata.
This may not be in your favor considering the rise in identity theft on social media. Thankfully, you can easily delete information about your location through the very useful deGeo app .
It’s not always that I want to reveal my GPS coordinates with other people when I share pictures on social media. That’s why I liked deGeo. It’s very simple to use and allows you to take out all unnecessary information from the snaps you select from your Camera Roll.
How to use deGeo for iPhone
When you launch the app it will ask for permission to access your images, and a tutorial will follow. You can also save a copy of an image without location metadata if you don’t want to upload it instantly.
You can check if a photo has coordinate metadata embedded on it by simply swiping to the left. This will reveal a Map on your iPhone which will show your coordinates, date/time stamps, and a location name. If an image doesn’t have geotag data you won’t see a pin marking the spot where the snap was taken.
You can share the image by swiping down or tapping the Share button. Swiping up will allow you to select another photo or you can tap the Choose an Image button. By swiping to the right you will be shown a menu from where you can load the image you last took. Recently taken images can also be loaded by shaking your iDevice. Tapping the photo will display it in full-screen and swiping in any direction will take you out that mode.
You can double-check if the app was able to delete all location related metadata from an image by opening Photos+. If the app did the job correctly, which it will no doubt do, people who see the image won’t even be able to determine if it was taken on an iPhone or Android device. You can select up to eight images through the app and take out location metadata before sharing them with friends, etc.
The deGeo’d images can be shared on various option platforms such as Instagram, Dropbox, Twitter, Flickr, Evernote, Google+, Sina Weibo, and Tumblr. You can also share them through emails and text.
Final thoughts
This is an amazing easy-to-use app through which you can instantly delete all location metadata from the images you shot and don’t have to worry about disclosing your location when you share them online. For iOS 8 users, the app has a sharing extension through which images can be saved in any photo app already present on your device.
You can download deGeo from the App Store for $1.99. It has been optimized for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section about it if you give it a try.
