Most people assume that without your iPhone the Apple Watch can’t do anything so in this post we want to tell you all about what your Apple Watch can do on WiFi with or without your iPhone connected in its Bluetooth range. All the features listed here don’t require an iPhone to be connected via Bluetooth or the same WiFi network. In short, Apple Watch can do all these things on its own without having to have an iPhone at all.
Timekeeping
This is kind of obvious but the Apple Watch can tell the local and world time without an iPhone. It also supports alarm, timer and stopwatch functions too.
Tracking Activities
The Apple Watch can monitor and track how many steps you take, how much you stand up, climb stairs and more. The data is all presented to you in the Activity App. The Watch keeps tracking these activities even without an iPhone connected and when you do connect an iPhone, the data is all synced with the Health App on your iPhone automatically.
Track Workouts
The Workout app on your Watch can be used to track your workouts. Just set your exercise and goal and off you go without having to connect to your iPhone. The watch’s built in sensors will track your heart rate, strides and more. Even better, the Apple Watch can also measure the distance ran on its own thanks to a feature in the watch that stores accurate information about your stride so that it can measure distance. You will have to run a few times with both your Watch and iPhone so that the Workout app can use the iPhones GPS to calibrate you stride first.
Monitor Heart Rate
The Apple Watch measures your heart rate every 10 minutes and this data is then synced to your iPhone whenever you connect it.
Music Playback
When you first connect your iPhone and Apple Watch you can sync music tracks so that you can play music directly from your Watch over a pair of Bluetooth connected headphones.
View Photos
The Apple Watch is designed to sync all photos on your iPhone that have been marked as favorites. This means that you can carry your favorite photos on your wrist all the time.
Apple Pay
If you have Apple Pay set up you can make payments at contactless payment terminals even if you don’t have your iPhone with you at the time. This feature doesn’t require any internet connection either.
Passbook
The Passbook feature for the Apple Watch lets you store electronic tickets, boarding passes, etc., and all of these will work independently of your iPhone.
iMesasge
If you are on WiFi you will be able to use Apple Watch to send and receive iMessages. This is great if your iPhone is on charge in another room or out of Bluetooth range.
Digital Touch
Just like iMessages, you can use Digital Touch to send scribbles, taps or your heart rate to your favorite contacts using your WiFi connection.
Siri
Even if you are not connected to your iPhone but are on a WiFi network you will be able to use Siri. Siri’s functionality is limited if your iPhone is turned off.
There are a number of other features but these will require your iPhone to be connected to the same WiFi network and include the sending and receiving of SMS messages, the weather app, maps, mail, stocks, making and receiving calls, and notifications.
So as you can see, there are plenty of great things that you can do with your Apple Watch even if you don’t happen to have your iPhone with you.
