De La Soul is back and they're giving away most of their back catalog to promote the release of their forthcoming album You're Welcome, their first album in a decade. But you have to act quick, because the music's only available for one day. Rolling Stone:
"It's about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it," De La Soul member Posdnuos tells Rolling Stone. "It's been too long where our fans haven't had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them."
Hip hop trio De La Soul burst on the scene in 1989 with their smash hit debut album, Three Feet High and Rising. Led by the chart-topping "My Myself and I," the band separated itself from some rap acts of the day by focusing on a positive message along with catchy beats and samples.
Since then De La has released half a dozen albums and toured extensively, collaborated with acts ranging from Gorillaz to Mos Def, and has been critically lauded for their efforts - thought they've gone through some hard changes as their labels have changed and the world has changed around them. The digital music scene has taken over, and to date, only one of De La's albums (their last one, 2004's The Grind Date), is available through iTunes.
So De La Soul is releasing their music themselves. While you'll have to pay for The Grind Date, you can pick up Three Feet High And Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, Art Official Intelligence: Bionix, and Remixes, Instrumentals and Rarities.
The distribution system - Dropbox - was briefly overwhelmed when the files first went up this morning, but they're moving along at a fast clip now. To get the music, you have to sign up for De La Soul's e-newsletter, once you've verified it, you get a link to download.
