The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

There is a plethora of iOS apps that can give you an insight on the current weather forecast, but not many of them feature a clean and minimalist interface along with gesture based functionality like Weathercube does. And if any of you have ever used the popular to-do app ‘Clear’, you’ll find this weather app strikingly familiar.

The app is completely interactive and you don’t have to use any buttons to utilize its functionality; it’s all swiping, pinching and tapping your way through the forecast of the day.

How to Use Weathercube for iOS

After installing this app on your device, you’ll be greeted by a small tutorial that informs you about the basic features. There are big bold white cubes featuring fonts that are easy to digest, and you only get to use gestures and swipes to make your way around these cubes.

To start using the app, you have to add cities through the Settings menu, which can be accessed through a pinch out gesture on the daily temperature. In the Cities menu, you can assign at most 6 locations, which can be searched in real-time through their name or zip code. You can also delete any location with a rightward swipe action.

A downward swipe on any of the cube back in the main interface will show the forecast for the six locations, and a weather icon will be placed on each day. Tapping on each will further show the specifics, and swiping upwards will display the weather at three hour intervals.

The main highlight of the app however is the Daily Forecast view: here you can tap either right or left to see the weather forecast for the next three days, and the 6 cubes that appear will contain information about temperature, wind speed, direction, cloud coverage, precipitation amount, humidity and condition. Tapping on these cubes will show you morning, evening and afternoon weather data.

You can also use a pinch out with a horizontal gesture in the Daily Forecast screen and reveal the Share screen, where you can see the weather forecast thumbnail that can be shared over social media.

What’s more… the app is accompanied by sound effects that become evident with the use of gestures, and there are even animations you get to see on the cubes.

Final Thoughts

If you’re found of gestures and were looking for a quirky and fun way to keep updated with daily weather reports, then Weathercube can easily become your default weather app for the next few months, or longer.

The app was recently updated for iOS 7 and now features new colors for icons and cubes, as well as a flatter design. Other introductions in the updated version include calendar integration.

You can download Weathercube free of cost from the App Store at the moment, but it will carry a price tag once the limited time free download offer comes to an end. Leave your thoughts when you try it out.
