Merging iOS with OS X is a “waste of energy” according to Apple executives Posted: 24 Jan 2014 06:38 AM PST Don't expect Apple to follow Microsoft's move to merge all of its operating systems under one common interface or resource. Doing so would be a "waste of energy" according to Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing. Schiller made the comment in an interview with Macworld in which he and lead software engineer Craig Federigh discussed the history and vision of Mac computers. Federigh explained why iPhones and MacBooks shouldn't run the same software by saying: "The reason OS X has a different interface than iOS isn't because one came after the other or because this one's old and this one's new. Instead, it's because using a mouse and keyboard just isn't the same as tapping with your finger. You don't want to say the Mac became less good at being a Mac because someone tried to turn it into iOS. At the same time, you don't want to feel like iOS was designed by [one] company and Mac was designed by [a different] company, and they're different for reasons of lack of common vision." Since Apple began introducing more cross-platform features and Microsoft started its "One Microsoft" effort to have more commonalities between Windows 8, Windows Phone, and Xbox, some have wondered if Apple might be on the same course.
