When it comes to using search on iOS, we mostly think of Spotlight.
However, the Spotlight in iOS does not have filters or search classifiers, as it does in OS X.
Searchr is an iOS app from a developer that realized this, so it functions like Spotlight but has filters for the information you want to search for specific apps. It lets you launch apps, and has several other features.
The results are filtered by apps so if you’re searching for a file in Dropbox, you can scroll down for each result from the resource.
How to use Searchr for iOS
After installing this app on your device, you will see four tabs. The ‘search’ tab is only a search bar on the top of an empty page – it populates with search results. The ‘services’ tab will show you all actions that can be executed and the indexed apps.
The ‘downloads’ tab is for videos and photos imported from our phone, and the ‘settings’ tab is to upgrade and remove apps.
During its use, Searchr will also let you find useful services such as translation and dictionary for adding in its index. The services will have to be selected individually. And in addition to searching applications, you can also select websites that should be included in the search.
Examples of searched websites could be eBay, Reddit and even the App Store. The search results will appear in the same order as in the list and they can be reordered for better reflection later.
The app also executes actions from the search page, some of which are pre-configured, while others you can add on your own. The pre-configured ones include options for creating notes with apps like Evernote.
Final thoughts
While this app doesn’t emulate OS X Spotlight, it has better app specific searching capabilities. You can download Searchr for free. It works on iOS 7 and above. Feel free to leave comments if you give it a try.
