Apple stores support World AIDS Day by changing logos from white to red

Apple stores support World AIDS Day by changing logos from white to red

Tomorrow, December 1st, is officially World AIDS day, and just as it has done in recent years, Apple is raising awareness for AIDS relief by changing the color of its logo from white to red at its retail stores.

According to Mashable, Australia is the first to see the switch:

[The Sydney Flagship] is the first store in the world to light up in a show of commitment to the (RED) AIDS initiative, that is fighting for an AIDS-free future. Apple will then change the colour of its logo across key stores in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Europe and the United States, as the various timezones tick into Monday.

Apple has been a big supporter of AIDS research, and frequently collaborates with RED, a charity that raises money to promote AIDS research, education, and treatment. The latest of these collaborations was announced last week when Apple said that it would donate a portion of every retail and online sale on Cyber Monday to AIDS research.

Additionally, a number of apps on the App Store recently went red by updating their branding and pledging to donate proceeds from in-app purchases to AIDS research.

Editor's desk: Taking the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro on the road

There's no such thing as perfection. We strive for it. We seek it. But we can never find it. Because everything has its advantages and disadvantages, it's good points and bad. Everything is a compromise. Knowing that, understanding that, the trick becomes finding the best compromise. For me, for a few years, that's been a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro at home, and a 13-inch MacBook Air for travel. But now that's changed. Now I'm typing this on an airplane, on a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. So, why?

My first modern Mac laptop was a 17-inch MacBook Pro. I was working as a graphic designer at the time and I wanted all the pixels. Lugging it around was a pain — literally, in my shoulder and neck — but it was like having a desktop with me everywhere. When Apple discontinued the 17-inch, I switched to a 15-inch with the higher resolution display option. It was lighter, relatively speaking, than than 17-inch without sacrificing the pixels.

Then came the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro. I'd experienced Retina before on the iPhone, of course, and I knew I wanted it on everywhere. Yet I'd begun working full time at iMore and traveling far more frequently and, thanks to nagging injuries from grappling, I knew it would be tough to lug it around. There were rumors of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro coming down the line, but I was impatient. So I jumped on the 15-inch.

It was, as I said at the time, the best computer I'd ever owned. It was fast and, wow, but it was beautiful. Yet Retina came at a price. It had less working area than my old higher resolution MacBook Pro (though I could scale it), and while the battery life was okay at first, it got worse over time.

When the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro was announced, I considered switching to it, but ultimately decided I couldn't justify the expense.

When Apple announced the new MacBook Air with it's much longer battery life, however, I began to consider switching again. In fact, I began to think I'd miscalculated. I'd traded too much power for too little longevity. So, I attached the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro to a Thunderbolt display at home, and bought the 13-inch MacBook Air to travel with. (11-inches was just a bit too claustrophobic for me.)

I loved the MacBook Air. Combined with an iPad as a Wi-Fi hotspot, it meant I no longer had to leave coffee shops when my battery ran down. I could very literally close the coffee shop down. (I didn't, of course, because not a monster.)

I used the MacBook Air for all my trips, and the lightness was fantastic. Yet a lot of my job involves shooting and processing video at events and I quickly found that the MacBook Air just didn't excel at crunching a ton of Final Cut Pro X. It was good, very good even, for short or casual video, but not good when there was a lot of video, long video, or turn-around time really mattered.

The MacBook Air too came at a price. And I realized I'd miscalculated again. This time I'd traded too much longevity for too little power.

So, last week I ordered a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. I'll spare you the Goldilocks analogy you've seen trucking your way since the first paragraph and just say — so far, so great.

The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro has plenty of power. Tt can run Handbrake about 1/3rd the speed of the Retina 5K iMac, which is impressive given the hardware disparity. It's also lighter than any other MacBook Pro I've ever had, and the battery is lasting the 9-hours Apple promises on the spec page. At least for now.

There are, of course, rumors of a Retina MacBook Air on the horizon, but I'm not sure that'll offer the performance I want either. I'll have to wait and see how I feel about this calculation — this compromise — sometime next year.

For now, I'm on my first trip with the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and it's performing admirably. So much so, I think I might have finally found the right compromise for me.

P.S.: Since I'm traveling, here are a couple tips I've had occasion to pick up:

  • If you want to help make sure you're not bumped off an oversold plane, always make sure you have a confirmed seat when you book.

  • If you want to help make sure you're not bumped off an over-weight plan, always make sure you've checked baggage.

Steve Jobs has been awarded almost 150 new patents since his death

061011AXB118

Steve Jobs died on October 5, 2011, in Palo Alto, CA, leaving behind a legacy of technological innovation and having built one of the largest companies in the world. At the time of his death Jobs had been awarded 317 patents over the course of his life, an incredible portfolio for anyone. But something interesting as happened since then; Job's number of patients now stands at 458. In the years since his death Steve Jobs has been awarded 141 additional patents.

The patient news was discovered and documented by the MIT Technology Review , who point out that the distinction for posthumous patent awarding might now be exactly what it may seem. While Jobs was indeed an innovator, often the placement of his name on a patent had to do with his work on smaller details of a design, fine tuning things others might not think about.

Tim Wasko, who developed the interface for Apple's QuickTime player and the iPod, remembers that Jobs would give feedback on small details, and he'd often end up with a position on a patent. That's what Wasko says happened when he came up with a concept for a button used on software called iDVD. The button shuts like an iris, giving you a chance to interrupt a process. "It looked pretty cool so he loved that," says Wasko. "He had useful comments, suggestions, and it's worthy of him being on the patent."

If you're interested in how patents work MIT Technology Review's article goes into some of the specifics of why patents like this are awarded, even after someone's death. In the meantime we're looking forward to seeing how many patents Steve Jobs will be able to collect this year while his soul is off watching from above.

Appendix v: The Lost Falls

  • Guide Ida to the first switch which will make the totem appear.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Next use the lever to rotate the totem in order for Ida to walk to the other side. You'll have to move Ida to the grassy area to make the lever appear again in order to complete her walk across the falls. You can then reach the next switch.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Use the totem to hit the next switch reveal the next part of the level. After that you can guide Ida up the stairs and to the next switch. The totem can then hit the switch at the top to open a door for Ida.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Ida then appears at the top of the level. Walk back through the door after positioning the totem underneath the platform that contains the next door. Then tap the door for Ida to go back through. This time she will be able to access the door. The totem can then hit the last switch in order to rise up to the next portion of the level.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Use the totem to weigh down the walkway so Ida can step onto it. Once she is on it, position the totem so she can walk on top of it once the lift pops back up.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Ida can then walk onto the second lift. Place the totem on the first lift and the second one will raise for Ida to reach the door. Lastly, use the totem to activate the next switch.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Once you activate the first switch with Ida, move the totem onto the platform before stepping off the switch. You can then slide the totem up and down on the platform in order to reach the next switch with Ida.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Next use the totem in order to guide Ida to the next door. She can simply get on top of it using the second platform. Then slide the totem over to the door.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Hit the next switch two switches using the totem. Ida will then appear and have easy access to the third switch.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Move the totem underneath where the rock lifted. You can then guide Ida to the next door while the totem prevents the rock from falling. This is the end of the level.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

Appendix vi: The Citadel of Deceit

  • Move Ida across by moving the middle walkway and going through the first door. After this you can repeat the same process sideways to hit the first switch.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • This time move onto the middle walkway and raise Ida upwards to reach the next door.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Use the lever to rotate the walkway so Ida can reach where she is positioned in the first photo in the set below. You can then rotate the walkway again in order to reach the next door.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Ida will now appear upside down where you can then hit the next switch. Another lever appears and you can spin it to move the stairwell you can down from. You can then reach the next door.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Start off by guiding Ida to the top door on the left like shown in the first photo below. Ida can then reach the door shown in the second photo.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Ida then appears at the top where she can access the upside down directly below her. This will take you to the next section. Head off to the right of the course where you can access the door shown in the second photo below.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Flip the switch directly outside of the door and then walk through the door to the left. You can then walk down and access the door in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Flip the last remaining switch and you will be taken to the end of the level.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

Appendix vii: The Oubliette

  • After you flip the first switch, an orange landscape will appear. This section is easy enough as you simply wind your way around. The second switch will allow the entire landscape to be rotated. When Ida needs to be out of your sight, just rotate to see the rest of the course.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • The next section is a purple room and has a pole in the middle that rotates downward. Go through the door at the bottom. You will appear back in orange room once you rotate the view where you can hit its remaining switch. Rotate to the view shown in the second photo below in order to reveal Ida again. She can then reach the door at the top.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Ida will re-appear in the purple room where you can use the poll in the center to spin her around to the top door. A new green room will appear when you rotate. Use the middle staircase to guide Ida to the next switch.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Walk Ida onto the black platform and rotate until you can reach the next switch in a new green room. Rotate the lever to the right until the water level is as low as it will go.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Walk back onto the black platform and continue rotating until you reach a yellow room. You can hit the switch at the bottom now. The middle platform now has the ability to be rotated. Put it in the position you see in the second photo below.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • You can now move into the door shown in the first photo below. Ida will then appear in the pink room where you can walk to the next door at the top.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Tap on the bottom door in the pink room and Ida will walk through it. Keep rotating to find a tree. Keep spinning until it is grown and shows Ida with a switch you can hit at the bottom.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • You can then pull the top of the level downwards to reveal the end of the level.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

Appendix viii: Nocturne

  • Head over to the right side of the course to recover the first totem piece. You'll need to use the switches in order to bring it down from the top after you pull it out of the water.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Head back the way you came and this time head downwards to retrieve the next piece. You can use the area shown in the first photo in order to remove Idea from the top of the totem piece. You'll need to do this to be able to hit the switch shown in the second photo.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • You'll need to use the totem piece to retrieve the next piece as Ida will need to remain on the switch. Simply use a seesaw motion on and off the switch to retrieve the piece of the totem that is under the water. Once you've recovered it, stack the totems as shown in the second photo.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • You can then hit the next switch by sliding a piece of the totem onto it like in the first photo below. You can then return with the one totem piece back to the main area. When you take Ida off the switch you can raise up the piece you just recovered and bring it over like shown in the second photo below.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Now head to the top of the course and position the totems like shown in the first photo below before taking Ida to the rotation platform. You can then recover the third piece. Stacking them is a bit of an optical illusion as shown in the second photo below. Just take Ida back down the stairs first or she will be in the way.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • Now bring the totem stacked three high to the position shown in the photo below. You can slide the first piece off as far as you can as shown in the first photo. Now place Ida on the rotation block and hit the next switch. A lever will appear and you can position the totem piece as shown in the second photo below.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • You can now slide the totem piece off to the right and down below the water to help retrieve the final piece. Use the lever to guide your way. You can then stack the totem four high. Have Ida hit the switch in the first photo below and guide the totem to the platform with four arms. Here you'll need to use optical illusions to disassemble the totem and place one piece on each corner.

Monument Valley Forgotten Shores: Levels 5-8 walkthrough

  • In the next section, keep climbing with Ida until you can't climb any further. Guide the totem to the top in order to complete the level.
