If you do a lot of writing, especially with system-level utilities like TextEdit, you may have noticed a change in the way OS X Mavericks handles text. By default, Mavericks keeps "smart quotes" on. This isn't optimal behavior, so here's a quick guide to turn them off.
In the top menu bar, Click on the logo and then System Preferences.
Now click on Keyboard.
Click on the Text tab.
Uncheck Use smart quotes and dashes.
That's it, that's all there is to it. From now on, you should get "plain" quotes without having Mavericks unexpectedly turn them all fancy on you.
