Take a look at the iPhone 6 screen plate next to the iPhone 5

iPhone 6 front panel

We have another iPhone 6 leak for you today, and it is a perfect look at the devices front panel screen cover courtesy of 9to5Mac. The shot perfectly shows the size of Apple's upcoming smartphone flagship, while it also hints at some of the design lines Cupertino is employing on the iPhone 6.

Needless to say, the iPhone 6 certainly appears to have a different design language to the iPhone 5 series (the 5, 5s, and 5c) although this is still distinctly an iPhone. What is also obvious is that the iPhone 6 will be bigger than any other iPhone before it, and to emphasis this and the different design, the front screen plate has been placed next to one from the iPhone 5 series.

We love that Apple has answered the size critics while only enhancing the overall dimensions of the iPhone marginally. Side by side, it is plainly obvious that the iPhone 6 is bigger than the iPhone 5, but it is also not dramatically bigger than the older handset. That will appease the screen fanatics who demanded a bigger panel, while it should also keep the purists happy who didn't see the need to have a bigger screen.

The iPhone 6 is reported to come with a 4.7-inch screen and taking a look at this capture that seems to be about right. Of course, that is still smaller than just about any Android flagship, but Apple is ready to fight on two fronts by releasing a 5.5-inch iPhone phablet. Despite bumping the display real estate on the iPhone 6, the design team at Cupertino has done a good job keeping the bezels ultra slim, especially along the landscape side.

In terms of design, Apple has changed the squared corner look of the iPhone 5 series and updated it with a more curvy design. This pushes it close towards the HTC One M8 from an aesthetic view, but still it is nice to see Apple is thinking about revising the general look of the handset through each generation. However, there will still be those who think the design revision is not enough and Apple needs to do more if its flagship is to be considered the design icon of modern smartphones. We are somewhere in between and will reserve judgement until launch day before praising or condemning the incremental design update.

Apple makes changes to its iPhone AppleCare plans

Apple AppleCare

Apple has made some rather big changes to its AppleCare program, especially the more premium AppleCare+ model. AppleCare is the free 90 day service the company offers for product support after the purchase of an iPhone and iPad, while AppleCare+ is a paid service that extends that support for a full two years. The + plan also covers the most worrying of product issues, accidental damage, by allowing for two incidents of accidental damage over the two year period. There is also the standard non-90 day AppleCare plan that costs less than AppleCare+ but lacks the accidental damage cover.

All customers buying an iPhone or iPad were given the 90 day version free with no strings attached, although there were certain limitations when opting for AppleCare+. Chief among those limitations was that customers had to subscribe to the AppleCare+ program within 30 days of buying an iPhone or iPad. Apple has today extended the window to 60 days in all global regions apart from Japan, where for some reason the period remains 30 days.

Apple has today nixed the medium tier of AppleCare by axing the standard two year plan that did not have accidental cover. That means the only AppleCare+ plans now available are the standard free 90 day after purchase plan and the AppleCare+ two year plan that costs $99. For the time being the change is limited to the US, Canada, and Japan, so if you are in another region and wanted the middle tier plan you can still grab it. Although you will probably have to be quick as Apple is likely to cut the plan worldwide in the not too distant future.

These changes are also limited to iPhone and iPad AppleCare as products such as Macs and iPods are not yet subject to the overhaul. AppleCare+ has been a success for Apple, generating $2 billion in revenue since launching two years ago and it now boasts 30 million customers.
