Rockstar Consortium --?the patent holding firm created by Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson, Microsoft, and Sony to purchase thousands of foundational telecom patents from now-defunct Nortel -- looks set to wind down operations after the partners agreed to sell much of Rockstar's patent portfolio to IP risk mitigation company RPX.

A survey of 880 college students conducted last week by Chegg found 51 percent named Apple as their preferred smartphone, tablet and laptop brand while 46 percent named Beats as their top pick for headphones.

At next week's Chaos Communication Congress in Germany, a researcher will demonstrate a method in which a malicious actor could use a specially-crafted Thunderbolt device to inject a bootkit -- which could survive nearly any attempt to remove it --?into the EFI boot ROM of any Mac with a Thunderbolt port.
