The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

When it comes to photo editing, most iPhone users look for apps that offer brightness, cropping and other great frames, textures and filters to make images appear fantastic.

Afterlight is an app that covers all these requirements, along with offering effectiveness and simplicity. It has a huge library of filters and unique editing features that are absent in other photo editing apps.

The camera of the app is quite similar to the iPhone camera, and the app includes everything to give your images that artistic and creative look.

How to use Afterlight on iOS

After installing the app on your iPhone, you’ll be given an option to take an image, or open an image from the camera roll. The camera inside the app has extra functions compared to the device’s camera, including a grid overlay, a self-timer, and separate controls for exposure and focus.

The interface is easy to navigate, with categories including frames, cropping, effects, filters and adjustments arranged at the bottom of the interface. Tapping each of the category will present a sub-menu of the tools in that category.

The menu of adjustments includes options like hue-saturation, contrast, brightness, exposure, and other tweaks that can be applied. Some of the tweaks include vignette, color adjustment, temperature and sharpening.

The control is available in the form of a slider that can be used to adjust the effect’s intensity. Each of the adjustments do a good job to enhance the image, and doesn’t result in an over the top effect. There’s also an undo button that can be used to revert the image in its original form.

The app has 56 filters that cover all moods that you possibly want. Some people may find the subtle nuances overwhelming, but most of you going to love them. For example, you can adjust the filter’s intensity, and can also apply one filter over another to combine the effects.

There are also 75 frames to choose from, and they have loads of shapes including heart, oval, circle, triangle, etc. The frames can be adjusted in corner roundness and size, and there is the extra option to adjust the frame’s color and opacity.

Textures are one of the strengths of the app. There is a variety of leak overlays, and apart from adjusting the opacity/intensity, the app lets you flip vertically and horizontally, rotate, or invest the colors. And you can add a unique look to any image with multiple layer textures.

Final thoughts

Afterlight is a great app that has all the editing powers. It also lets you save the image to the camera roll, open it in another app, or share on social media. The app was recently optimized for iOS 8 and also works with iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6.

You can download Afterlight for $0.99 from the App Store. Let us know if you give it a try and feel free to leave comments.
