The iPhone and iPad Blog by Simon

Screen space is not an issue for devices like iPhone 6 Plus as it is for the iPhone 5s. So those using smaller devices need to leverage apps that let them see more screen.

Minuum is an app that can be set as a default keyboard on iOS 8. It features an auto-correct that learns what you type, a keyboard that can be minimized to a single line on the screen, and predictive typing for getting to more words quickly.

The keyboard extension can be used in minimized mode or in full screen.

How to use Minuum

After installing the app on your device, swipe down to switch the default regular keyboard into the one with a single line of letters. Next, tap the section of the keyboard that includes your preferred letters. The app’s auto-correct feature lets it figure out what you type.

The layout includes letters arranged in diagonals of three, and only the last four are diagonals for two. The first option contains Z, Q, A, while the second includes, S, W, X. Tapping the first will let you type A and tapping the second will let you type S.

While typing, the letters and suggested words appear above the keyboard. Typing S and A will also display Z and X and W and Q. Also, predictive suggestions such as ‘ask’ or ‘all’ will also appear on the screen. Tap the space bar for accepting the current word, and select the suggested word instead by tapping on it.

Swiping towards the left lets you delete a word and swiping towards the right lets you add space. Swiping upwards brings back the full keyboard. The app also learns new words and suggests them to you in the future.

There is only a light theme supported by the app at the moment, but the developer is working on adding more colors in future.

Final thoughts

Minuum is quite useful for people who need more screen space and need to type fast on their keyboard. Even though it looks small in nature, it figures out what you are planning to type. There is now also Privacy Control which lets you take control of data you share with the app.

You can download Minuum for iOS 8 currently on a sale price of $0.99. Let us know if you give it a try and feel free to leave comments.
