Apple finally introduced NFC technology in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but it looks like you won't be able to use the feature to pair devices, share files or connect to NFC-enabled speakers. According to Cult of Mac, who received confirmation from an Apple spokeswoman, the NFC functionality will be locked down to Apple Pay, with developers not getting access to the chip for at least a year.
Apple did not clarify whether NFC will be made accessible after one year, but for now the company is refraining from promoting NFC as a standalone feature, instead touting it as a component of Apple Pay. It is possible that developers will be able to use NFC in the future, as Apple demoed an iPhone 6 using NFC to unlock a hotel room.
This isn't the first time Apple locked down a new feature. Last year, the TouchID sensor was unavailable to developers, with third-party apps getting access to the fingerprint sensor in iOS 8. It is feasible that Apple is taking a similar approach with the NFC technology.
How do you feel about NFC being locked down to Apple Pay?
