iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus shift more than 4 million pre-orders Posted: 16 Sep 2014 07:31 AM PDT Apple has released its numbers for the first 24 hours of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on pre-order and as we all expected, the numbers are unbelievable. In fact, the two smartphones recorded pre-order figures that surpassed 4 million, making these the best-selling iPhones out of the gate so far. Interestingly, we have not even got to the bricks and mortar roll out that will see millions of handsets sold over the hard roll out. Today announced a record number of first day pre-orders of iPhone® 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the biggest advancements in iPhone history, with over four million in the first 24 hours. Demand for the new iPhones exceeds the initial pre-order supply and while a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on Friday and throughout September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October. Additional supply of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available to walk-in customers on Friday, September 19 at 8:00 a.m. local time at Apple retail stores. Customers are encouraged to arrive early or order online from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com) to pick up in-store or receive an estimated delivery date. Both models will also be available on Friday from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, additional carriers and select Apple Authorized Resellers. These are the kinds of numbers that no other smartphone vendor can match, not even the mighty Samsung on a device to device basis. The pre-order sales certainly outdo those of the iPhone 5, which topped 2 million, although the company did not reveal figures for the iPhone 5s and 5c roll out.

Tim Cook says Apple is not interested in user information Posted: 16 Sep 2014 05:38 AM PDT Tim Cook's second part interview with PBS' Charlie Rose saw the question of user privacy arise and whether Apple is deeply involved in information grabbing and data scraping like other companies. Google (who Cook named as Apple's main competitor in part 1) and other companies such as Facebook make their money by curating user information, mostly to use for targeted advertising. Cupertino CEO Cook was adamant that Apple is not doing the same. In fact, he forcefully said that the company is not even interested in that practise and that he personally finds it offensive. He also expressed in no uncertain terms that Apple would never give personal information unless the authorities would "cart us out in a box". You can check out the clip in the video after the break, but if it is not available in your country, here's the written transcript: Cook (responding to Rose's question about how much information companies are privy to): "We take a very different view of this than a lot of other companies have. Our view is, when we design a new service, we try not to collect data. So we're not reading your email. We're not reading your iMessage. If the government laid a subpoena to get iMessages, we can't provide it. It's encrypted and we don't have a key. And so it's sort of, the door is closed. But our business Charlie, is based on selling these [pointing to devices]. Our business is not based on having information about you. You're not our product. Our product are these, and this watch, and Macs and so forth. And so we run a very different company. I think everyone has to ask, how do companies make their money? Follow the money. And if they're making money mainly by collecting gobs of personal data, I think you have a right to be worried. And you should really understand what's happening to that data. And companies I think should be very transparent about it. From our point of view, you can see what we're doing on the credit card thing. We don't want it. We're not in that business. I'm offended by lots of it. And so, I think people have a right to privacy. And we'll reach higher and higher levels of urgency as more and more incidents happen. I think that the, for us, in the Snowden thing, just to go along on that for just a moment. What we wanted, was, we wanted instantly to be totally transparent because there were rumors and things being written in the press that people had backdoors to our servers. None of that is true, zero. We would never allow that to happen. They would have to cart us out in a box before we would do that. It's, if we ever get information, and we finally got an agreement from the administration to release how many times we had national security orders on Apple. And in a six month period, and we had to release a range, because they won't let us say the exact number, it's between zero and 250. That's the lowest number you can quote. Zero to 250." Now, I know a great many people will brush this off and simply say Cook is lying, but I actually like what he says here. In many ways it makes sense, Apple is a hardware company and I suspect the CEO of Samsung would answer similarly if asked the same question. When discussing companies that scrape for personal information, Apple and other hardware companies are rarely ones I think about. Google yes, Facebook sure, Microsoft of course, Apple? I am siding with Cook on this one.
